The Phillip Wylie Newsletter
Hacker Summer Camp last week was a lot of fun. I got to see friends and meet new people. One of my highlights was meeting listeners of the Phillip Wylie Show and Simply Offensive.
It was a very busy but fun week. On Tuesday, I spoke at SquadCon, where I gave my Optimal Offensive Security Programs talk, and later that afternoon, I assisted my sponsor, PlexTrac, in teaching a Pentest Report Writing Bootcamp. During DEFCON on Friday, I spoke in the Noobs Village and gave my Hacker Your Pentesting Career talk. I moderated a panel in the Adversary Village titled Cultivating the Adversarial Mindset, Offensive Cybersecurity, and the Power of Security Communities, joined by my friends Filipi Pires, Len Noe, and Chris Glanden. Saturday, I participated in a meet and greet in the OWASP Community Room.

In this inspiring cybersecurity conversation, Filipi Pires reflects on his decade-long journey in the industry, sharing lessons on patience, persistence, and embracing your personal career path. He discusses the realities of professional growth, the importance of continuous learning, and why comparing yourself to others can hold you back. Perfect for aspiring ethical hackers, penetration testers, and anyone navigating the cybersecurity career landscape.
Simply Offensive Season 1 Episode 7: Navigating the Cybersecurity Landscape with Tim Shipp
In this episode of Simply Offensive, Phillip Wylie is joined by Tim Shipp to discuss various aspects of cybersecurity, including the evolution of the field over the past 25 years, the importance of offensive security, and the challenges faced by both red and blue teams.
Tim shares his extensive background in cybersecurity, touching on incident response, the monetization of cyber attacks, and the significance of basic security hygiene.
The discussion also emphasizes the need for collaboration between offensive and defensive security practices, as well as offering advice for newcomers to the industry.
Upcoming Events
I always love connecting with people in my network and my podcast listeners. I am speaking at HOU.SEC.CON. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. The conference runs for two days and starts on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. Tickets are on sale now, and I hope to see you there.
Cybersecurity Tools
My security tool pick for the week is HackTricks AI (https://www.hacktricks.ai/). HackTricks AI was created by Carlos Polop, the creator and maintainer of HackTricks (https://book.hacktricks.wiki/en/index.html). HackTricks is a comprehensive cybersecurity resource and knowledge base focused on offensive security techniques, penetration testing, and ethical hacking. It provides detailed technical guides, cheat sheets, and practical examples for various hacking methodologies, including web application security, network exploitation, privilege escalation, and more. The content is often used by security professionals and enthusiasts to learn and improve their skills in identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities in a controlled and ethical manner. HackTricks AI is an extension or tool related to the HackTricks platform that leverages artificial intelligence to assist cybersecurity professionals and ethical hackers. It typically provides AI-powered guidance, automated analysis, or interactive help for penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, and exploitation techniques. By combining HackTricks' extensive knowledge base with AI capabilities, HackTricks AI aims to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of security assessments, offering tailored advice, code snippets, and step-by-step instructions based on user queries.
